Ludhiana: A 26-year-old realtor, who was on his way home for dinner in an SUV with a friend, was attacked by a group of assailants late on Monday night. This attack, which took place near Dholewal Chowk near division number 6 police station, was motivated by old rivalry over student politics, police said.
The victim, Jaswinder Singh, 26, a resident of Janata Nagar, was rushed to the civil hospital, from where he was taken to DMCH. His relatives informed the police. Jaswinder Singh said that he was on his way home with a friend when five to six men in a car intercepted them near Shaheedan Ferruman Sahib gurdwara at around 11pm. He said that the accused first rammed into his car to stop him and then threw bricks at the windowpane. The glass was shattered and the brick hit him on the head, he said. When he slowed down, the accused shot at him, he said.
Inspector Kulwant Kaur, SHO, division number 6 police station, said that the victim is out of danger. Police have identified the main accused as Jagjot Singh alias Baadshah, who attacked the victim with unidentified aides.
"Earlier, both groups indulged in a scuffle at Gill Road on Jan 2, when gunshots were fired. At that time too, Jagjot Singh and his aides were booked for attacking Jaswinder and his friends. The probe so far suggests that both groups have a rivalry over winning the presidency of a student organisation."
When asked if any arrests were made in that case, the inspector said, "The accused are yet to be arrested. Moreover, there were talks of compromise between both groups." A fresh FIR has been lodged in this case.
