SpiceJet launched a new flight route from Pune to Varanasi starting March 30 as part of its summer schedule. This was the only new flight added to Pune airport. The flight will operate six days a week, departing from Pune at 12:30 AM, except on Saturdays.
A senior official at Pune airport mentioned that out of the 109 available slots, airlines had occupied 104. The only addition to the schedule was a new domestic route to Varanasi.
‘We expect airlines to utilize the remaining slots as the schedule progresses,’ the official said, noting that no new international flights were added. ‘If all the slots are filled, the total flight movements will reach 218.’
On Sunday, the airport handled 204 flight movements, including 102 departures and 102 arrivals. “Passenger traffic has increased since the new terminal became operational in mid-last year. Our focus is now on ensuring smooth management,” the official added.
Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke stated, ‘With the updated schedule, Pune airport has further strengthened its domestic network, offering direct flights to 34 destinations across India.
On the international front, the airport remains well-connected with direct flights to Singapore, Dubai, and Bangkok.’
The airport has been struggling with congestion, particularly during arrival times. Passengers have complained about the taxi pick-up process at the AeroMall.
On a national level, the summer schedule saw a significant increase in flights, with a 5.5% jump in weekly flights compared to last year. The DGCA reported that Indian carriers will operate 25,610 weekly flights from 129 airports between March 30th and October 25th, compared to 24,257 weekly flights last year.
