Jaipur: Police Sunday busted a gang and arrested four suspects who would book rented cars and steal them before selling them off. The raid, conducted by the city police, revealed a well-orchestrated scheme aimed at defrauding unsuspecting vehicle owners.
According to DCP (West) Amit Kumar, in Dec, a Chomu resident lent a Mahindra Scorpio and a Mahindra Thar to two persons claiming to be planning a family trip. The two suspects, identified as Rahul Saini and Harendra Singh alias Kuldeep, approached the owner on behalf of a purported trip organiser.
However, suspicions arose when the owner later learned from Saini that the vehicles were in the hands of accomplices – Harkesh and Praveen – and would be returned soon. Matters escalated when Saini refused to return the cars, and Singh even threatened the owner, warning against further contact.
The owner filed an FIR on Jan 1, and an investigation led the police to arrest the accused identified as Praveen Kumar (22), Rahul Saini (23), Ravi Kumar alias Golu (19), and Harendra Singh alias Kuldeep Singh (33). "The accused allegedly rented the two vehicles from the owner with the ulterior motive of leasing them and selling them," said a police official, adding that the accused, after taking the car on rent, would rent them out to other suspects and eventually strike a deal to sell them off.
Police suspect the racket was operating for a considerable period of time.
