Gadag police shoot at notorious criminal trying to escape

Gadag: Gadag police opened fire at a notorious criminal who tried to escape from a police van at Dambal village on Monday. Accused Jayasimha Modekar and three cops were injured in the incident.
Gadag SP BS Nemagoud said that Manjunath Modiker, Ramesh Modiker, and Jayasimha Modiker were arrested by Mundargi police and were being taken to Laxmeshwar police station for interrogation in connection with a house theft.
"A team was formed to nab the gang. Jayasimha Durgamma Modiker, 22, a resident of Janata Colony, Jalahalli in Devadurga taluk, Raichur district, tried to escape from the police van. Though our cops warned him, he assaulted a personnel with his handcuff. In an act of self defense, Mundargi circle police inspector Manjunath Kusugal opened two rounds of fire at the left leg of accused. The accused has been wanted at Kagawad, Bagewadi, Tikota, and other police stations.
Police officer Veeresh Bisnalli and the accused were injured in the incident, and are admitted to GIMS hospital. "The accused might have been involved in offences in other states like Andhra Pradesh too. The three accused are habitual offenders involved in vehicle thefts, house robbery, and other cases," he explained.
