Grama Sabha meetings were held in Salem and Namakkal districts on the occasion of World Water Day on Saturday.

A grama sabha meeting was held in all 385 panchayats of the Salem district on Saturday. District Collector R. Brindha Devi participated in the meeting at the Veeranam panchayat in the Ayothiyapattinam panchayat union. Speaking to reporters, the collector noted that World Water Day is observed on March 22. During the meeting, discussions focused on several important topics, including rainwater harvesting, economical use of water, repairing damaged drinking water pipelines, recharging groundwater, preventing water contamination, encouraging the planting of trees in every household, renovating water bodies after removing encroachments, and raising awareness of water issues among all community members, including children.

Explaining the schemes implemented by the government in Veeranam panchayat, the Collector said that every 15 days, the quality of water should be tested and registered in the concerned register.

Similarly, Namakkal District Collector S. Uma participated in the grama sabha meeting held at Sirunallikovil panchayat in Kabilarmalai panchayat union. Speaking at the meeting, the collector asked the people to use cloth bags and avoid plastics that pollute water bodies. People should avoid burning and dumping garbage in water bodies and turn Namakkal into a plastic-free district, the Collector added.
