Coimbatore: The city police on Thursday busted a drug racket and arrested seven peddlers, one of them son of a woman sub-inspector attached to the Economic Offences Wing.
Police also seized 36.9 grams of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), 92.4 grams of cocaine, 2.6kg of ganja, 1.7kg of kush (a party drug), Rs25 lakh in cash, one money counting machine, four digital weighing machines, 122 premium liquor bottles, three cars, and 12 mobile phones from them.
A police officer identified the arrested drug peddlers as K Manikandan, 39, a call taxi owner cum driver from Sowripalayam Pirivu; S Vinayagam, 34, a call taxi driver from Valluvar Street at Ramanathapuram; V Krishnakanth, 34, an IT employee from Pappanaickenpalayam; M Mahavishnu, 28, a money lender from Vadavalli; D Adarsh, 24, a textile businessman from Sungam Bypass Road; A Rithesh Lamba, 41, a businessman (food) from Netaji Nagar at Nanjundapuram; and B Rohan Shetty, 30, a textile businessman from Trichy Road.
He said Mahavishnu's mother was a police sub-inspector. "All the arrested seven were produced before a judicial magistrate on Friday morning and lodged in jail under judicial custody."
A Saravana Sundar, city police commissioner, said they had been closely monitoring the pubs in the city to track drug movement, if any. "The arrested seven were peddling drugs to the people working in IT sector and those visiting pubs. They were getting drugs from Mumbai through couriers."
He said the arrested seven were involved in drug peddling for the past one and half years. "They were spending the proceeds from the drug sale either on lavish lifestyle or immovable properties, including land and houses at Teachers Colony. They were constructing a house at Kovaipudur as well. We will attach them as part of the case."
