Swimming training in more schools in State: Minister

Swimming training will be expanded to more schools in the State, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the Swim Safe scheme organised in association by the WHO-The George Institute for Global Health, Centre for Injury Prevention and Trauma Care and distribution of certificates.

The Minister said the swimming training was not only about learning a life skill but also safeguarding our future. Learning to swim provided one the confidence and skill to not only safeguard oneself but also protect others from accidents. The importance of survival swim training was never felt this much, he said.

The Minister said arrangements would be made for Government Upper Primary School, Nedumcaud, students and their mothers to get swimming training.

Swimming training was given to 300 students from Government Upper Primary School, Ambalathara, and Government Upper Primary School, Poojappura. An amount of ₹10 lakh was utilised for construction of swimming pool and training.

The Minister said swimming and water safety had been included in the school curriculum. The State government was also implementing programmes to promote swimming training and water safety awareness.

The General Education department’s Beats scheme was ensuring that children with special needs were getting scientific swimming training. Local bodies too were including novel swimming training in their annual plans, he said.
