Residents of Veeraperumalpuram and Paraikulam along with students, demanding the closure of a Tasmac-run IMFL retail outlet in their area, submitted a petition with Collector M.S. Sangeetha at the weekly grievance redress meeting in Madurai on Monday.

The women from the villages said the liquor shop, which was functioning on Veeraperumalpuram - Paraikulam road caused nuisance to the residents of the nearby villages.  Mahadevi of Paraikulam said that when the students returned home from schools in the late evening hours after attending special classes at school, they feared while walking past the liquor shop.

“As bottles lie scattered and drunk men loiter in the area, many women and students and even menfolk could not walk alone without the company of another person while crossing this place,” she said.

Despite several representations made to the district administration, no steps were taken to shift or shut down the shop, she said.

Not only the residents of these two villages, those from neighbouring villages such as S. Solapuram, Kumaralingapuram and S. Krishnapuram were also affected by the presence of this liquor shop, the petitioners said.
