Shivamogga district unit of the BJP on Monday staged a protest, opposing reservation for Muslims in contracts, the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs from the Assembly, and the alleged misuse of funds meant for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Shivamogga.

The protest was led by former Minister Araga Jnanendra, MLA for Shivamogga S.N. Channabasappa, BJP district president N.K. Jagadish, and former president T.D. Megharaj.

The protesters took out a march from A.A. Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and raised slogans against the Congress government.

Addressing the protesters, Mr. Jnanendra said that the Congress government was engaged in appeasing the Muslims for political reasons. The government made special allocations to the minority community in the Budget and also decided to give 4% reservation in granting contracts. He called upon the intellectuals and pro-Kannada activists to oppose the appeasement politics of the government.

Mr. Channabasappa alleged that Congress was diverting funds to the welfare of Muslims by closing nine State universities. The people of the State would teach a lesson to the Congress for its mistakes in the coming days, he said.

He also criticised the speaker for suspending BJP MLAs. He alleged that the speaker was acting to the tune of the Congress party.
