You may recall a few months ago that there was a lot of hoopla surrounding Big Lots going out of business. They were going, then they weren't. Then, they were again. Well, prepare for the next big shocker. They're back!

Yes, the store that we all thought was closing and going to retail heaven is making a comeback, but this doesn't seem like hearsay or a publicity stunt. Big Lots is coming back, and we're shocked and thrilled at the same time.

It became official that Big Lots was going out of business in December of last year. By January of this year, Big Lots was supposed to be no longer in operation since that was when all store closings were anticipated to be final. However, there seems to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

According to their corporate website, soft waves of Big Lot reopenings are set to start as early as April in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Virginia. More will follow the first wave, which is expected to continue until early June. Future location reopenings include those in in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and West Virginia. The stores in the first wave are currently being cleaned and remodeled in anticipation of reopening.

Why the turn of events? Variety Wholesalers, which took control of some of the stores, is behind the store's revival. This retailer, which owns stores in the mid-Atlantic such as Roses, Roses Express, and Maxway, has acquired about 200 Big Lot stores and plans to operate them as one of its banners. Customers can expect some of the great deals they were accustomed to, along with the addition of new merchandise.

Big Lot store reopenings will be great news for those distraught about losing this 57-year-old relic. It looks like Variety Wholesalers provided it a lifeline that may keep it alive for some time to come. This is good news for Big Lots. However, some beloved retail stores like Joann's that are currently closing their doors haven't been so lucky.
