Puttur Govt College launches fee-free admission drive to boost enrolment
Mangaluru: In a bid to improve admissions, the Government First Grade College in Jidekallu, Puttur, launched an innovative initiative aimed at attracting more students. With only 36 students currently enrolled in the BA and BCom streams, the college is now offering free admissions to the first 100 students in the upcoming academic year, expected to begin by the end of July.
Prof Subbappa Kaikamba, principal of the college, told TOI that the initiative is being supported by generous donors. "Our goal is to increase enrolments. The college will not handle any funds directly. Once a student comes for admission, they will be connected with a donor who will sponsor their entire fee," he explained.
Generally, the fee for govt colleges is approximately Rs 5,500 for boys and Rs 4,500 for girls. "Unfortunately, we have 20 students in the first year and 16 in the final year.. This initiative is a step towards reversing that trend," the principal added.
In addition to the fee waiver, free mid-day meals will also be provided to students. The scheme, already implemented this year, was made possible with support from the Puttur Traders' Association, which helped procure a gas stove and utensils. The Rotary Club has also been actively supporting various development activities at the college.
Further, the college has received permission to start a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) course from the next academic year. The college will also guide the students in securing seats in govt hostels if needed. "We are hopeful of securing sponsors for BCA students too. While private colleges charge around Rs 40,000–Rs 45,000 per year, govt colleges charge only about Rs 13,000 for this course. If sponsorships come through, these students will also benefit from free admissions," Prof Subbappa said.
The college also conducts skill-based vocational training workshops and focuses on arts, culture, and sports. Students will also be trained in entrepreneurship skills, job interview preparation, and introduced to traditional crafts and rural handicrafts. The institution is equipped with a computer lab, internet facilities, and a library.
