Probe into theft of liquor bottles valued over ₹1.25 lakh delayed by jurisdictional issue

Unidentified robbers decamped with 912 liquor bottles valued at over ₹1.25 lakh from a truck, which was proceeding from Pudukottai to Sivaganga on March 19.

The truck driver, Selvaraj, said that as he approached the Shenbagampettai check post in Keezhaseevalpatti police station limits in Sivaganga district, he found the liquor bottles missing. Immediately, he approached the police, but they refused to register a complaint.

As suggested by the Sivaganga police, he went to Thirumayam police in Pudukottai district to lodge the complaint. However, the police rejected it on the grounds that the crime came to light in Sivaganga district. Under such circumstances, when the matter was brought to the notice of Sivaganga SP Ashish Rawat, he directed DSP Selva Kumar to probe into the theft.

The DSP said that CCTV footage between Thirumayam and Keezhaseeval police station limits showed no such offence. However, a thorough probe would be conducted. A case had been registered.

The driver said he underwent mental agony due to the robbery. The vehicle stationed at the check post contained 1,100 boxes with 52,800 bottles, and 19 boxes, which had 912 bottles, went missing. The tarpaulin sheet covering the consignment was torn.
