Itanagar: The Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR), in collaboration with Abralow Memorial Multipurpose Society and supported by Itanagar Smart City Development Corporation Limited, organised a large-scale river cleaning drive and a placard-making competition here on Saturday to mark the World Water Day.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about river conservation and environmental responsibility. Volunteers gathered along the Energy Park stretch of the Yagamso River, working tirelessly to clear plastic waste and debris obstructing the river's flow. Simultaneously, students and youth participated in a placard-making competition under the theme ‘Save River, Save Life', using art and slogans to express their commitment to protecting waterways.
The competition's top three winners including, Kipa Achum, Jumgnam Bui (North East Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital), and Yanio Dadda (Kingcup School), were awarded gift hampers and tree saplings, symbolising both recognition and a commitment to a greener future.
Speaking on the occasion, YMCR general secretary Prem T Loda underscored the urgent need for river conservation, linking it to the year's World Water Day theme. "Glacier preservation is not a distant concept; it directly affects us here in Arunachal Pradesh. Our rivers, which sustain ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods, originate from Himalayan glaciers now threatened by climate change. As Arunachalese, we have a unique responsibility to protect these lifelines for future generations," he said.
The event combined action with awareness, inspiring youth and the community to take an active role in safeguarding the region's rivers and natural heritage.
