What nailed accused: Their return to check for CCTVs
Lucknow: CCTV footage captured the auto driver accused of kidnapping and murdering the woman in Lucknow returning to the crime route to check for surveillance cameras. The footage shows the suspect passing by a private hospital near Kasmandi police outpost at 2:07am, heading towards Malihabad with the victim. However, what raised further suspicion was his return later at 3:24am, apparently to confirm whether any cameras recorded his movements, the police said.
Police believe that after committing the crime in a secluded mango orchard, the suspect grew paranoid about being caught. His return to the scene of the crime was an attempt to identify possible CCTV cameras that could expose his involvement. The footage shows the auto slowing down in front of a private hospital, with the driver looking around as if scanning for cameras. The moment he noticed a CCTV camera, he sped away at full throttle, confirming his suspicion that the route was under surveillance.
Investigators revealed that the accused intentionally avoided highways, opting instead for deserted routes near Kasmandi police outpost, an area with minimal police presence at night. This strategy allowed him to evade detection during the abduction. However, his return visit to the crime route became a crucial mistake, as the very cameras he was searching for have now become key evidence against him.
Inspector Baidhyanath Singh of Malihabad confirmed that police secured multiple CCTV clips showing the suspect's movements before and after the crime.
