The country’s top edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah is preparing to bring an IPO and has planned to raise Rs 4,600 crore from the primary market. According to media reports, the company has submitted the necessary documents to market regulator SEBI. After Series B funding last year, the company’s valuation was estimated at $2.8 billion i.e. around Rs 25,000 crore.
PhysicsWallah was founded in 2016 by Alakh Pandey, a tuition teacher from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and today the company has more than 55 lakh paid students and its YouTube channel has 4.6 crore subscribers. The company has more than 14,000 employees. PhysicsWallah has offline centers in 105 cities, in which more than 2 lakh students study.
Interestingly, Alakh wanted to become an actor. Alakh, who used to perform street plays in schools and colleges, started teaching tuition from the eighth grade. At that time, he used to teach fourth grade children. While studying in the 11th grade, he taught tuition to ninth grade children. Alakh scored 91 percent marks in high school and 93.5 percent marks in intermediate. Due to financial constraints at home, he started teaching coaching for Rs 3,000 per month along with studies. The circumstances became such that his parents had to sell the house to educate son Alakh and daughter Aditi.
After completing 12th in 2010, he got admission in B.Tech in HBTI Kanpur. During his studies, he started making videos of his lectures and uploading them on YouTube. This is how ‘Physicswala’ started as a YouTube channel. Those preparing for competitive exams liked it a lot. When the views and subscribers on YouTube started increasing, he started focusing on making and uploading lecture videos. For three years, he kept uploading free videos on YouTube.
During the Corona period, he developed an app keeping in mind the problems of students preparing for JEE-NEET. He started giving them online coaching at a very low fee. Those preparing for competitive exams, especially NEET, like his style of teaching physics. His ability to solve difficult questions of physics and chemistry easily and explain it to those preparing made him very popular. Alakh was offered an annual package of Rs 40 crore by a coaching institute, but he turned it down.
In the year 2020, Alakh Pandey got Physicswala registered under the Company Act. His channel had now become a company. Pratik Maheshwari, who did engineering from IIT BHU, also joined him. While Pratik took over the business, Alakh got completely settled in academics.
