Updated - March 19, 2025 07:55 pm IST - RAMANATHAPURAM

Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh recently handed over the recovered ₹5 lakh cash to a victim that was lost due to a cyber fraud.

Pasupathi, aged 30, of Ilamanur, in February came across a post on social media platform, Instagram, about investments in crypto currency.

While exploring the social media posts about high returns for minimum investment, he got interested and messaged the profile for more details.

Through text, the unidentified users had replied to him about the details and asked him to register by paying an initial amount of ₹5 lakh.

As he was sent account details of a private bank, the victim as instructed deposited ₹5 lakh in the account.

Following this, he received no information from the social media account. He tried to contact the mobile number they had provided him with but got no response.

After learning that he was cheated in a cyber fraud, he approached the Ramanathapuram cybercrime police and registered a complaint.

Police said that they traced the bank account and the following transactions that happened after he deposited the money.

They reached a person in Chennai who received the amount finally. While investigating him, police found that he was also a middleman whose only work was to receive and deposit it again.

“As we found out that he was unaware of the network, we seized only the amount from that person,” police added.

However, further investigation to find the accused and the network was underway.
