Bhubaneswar: A 32-year-old ambulance driver set himself ablaze outside his wife's residence in Nayagarh district on Tuesday, days after she allegedly eloped with another person. The victim, identified as Litua Das, suffered 90% burns and remains in critical condition, police sources said.
In his statement to the police during treatment, he claimed that his wife, Rubi Nayak (25), and her family members subjected him to harassment, which ultimately led him to take the drastic step.
"As per Das's statement, he was upset following his wife's elopement. He visited her village at Lathipada and set himself on fire outside her house. His condition is serious," SP (Nayagarh) S Susree told TOI. Nayagarh sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Jyoti Ranjan Samantaray said they would register a case if Das's family files a complaint against Rubi and her kin.
Das, an ambulance driver of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, married Rubi about three years ago. Their initial relationship formed when Rubi's mother was receiving treatment at SCB, where Das assisted with her care. Subsequently, they got married.
"Their relationship deteriorated several months ago when Das came to know of her alleged extramarital relationship. Das became distressed after she left with another man recently," Samantaray said, adding, "We recorded his statement before an executive magistrate while he was admitted to Nayagarh hospital in a critical condition."
