The Government Railway Police (Dindigul) arrested a rail passenger identified as Navaneetha Krishnan, 44, of Kanniyakumari district and reportedly seized ₹13.76 lakh in cash from him on Monday.

Police said they had a tip-off that ganja was being smuggled in trains passing through Dindigul Railway Station and, hence, the teams intensified their check over the last 24 hours.

When Delhi-Kanniyakumari Thirukural Express arrived at Dindigul, the railway police conducted searches in a few coaches. Apprehending trouble, it is said, a man attempted to flee from the train. Immediately, the police chased and nabbed him. They found cash with the passenger.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the man had unaccounted cash with him and a physical count showed a total of ₹13.76 lakh.

According to a senior officer, the rail passenger had reportedly confessed to have exchanged foreign currencies with some contact in Chennai and had taken Indian currencies to the tune of ₹13.76 lakh. He was returning to Kanniyakumari.

A case was registered and the suspect was handed over to the Department of Income Tax officers for further interrogation.

The police officers said they suspected hawala operation behind the seizure of the cash as the accused could not account for the money during the interrogation.
