Gurukul teachers to be trained on students’ mental health

Teachers of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) will undergo a two-day workshop on mental health skills to help students efficiently deal with anxiety and depression.

The training will be held in two batches of 120 and 118 teachers each at the MCR HRD Institute on March 17 and March 19 and will be led by Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) trainer Mohammed Rafi of ‘Magic of Change’.

According to Secretary TGSWREIS Alagu Varshini, the main objective of the training is to establish a more meaningful emotional connect between teachers and students, improve the mental health of students, and help them perform better in education.

Ms. Varshini cited the collaborative study by researchers from NIMHANS, University of Melbourne, Australia, and other Indian academic institutions, that revealed prevalence of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and attempts among students in colleges in India.

The observational study published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine had employed 8,542 students, including 4,800 female students from 30 universities in 15 cities and nine states in the country.

There was high suicide tendency among students of premiere institutions. And one of the main reasons was the pressure of exams combined with poor family relations.

“Based on this survey, it has been decided to prevent such situations in gurukuls. Hence, first teachers will be trained on mental health and behaviour pattern of students, with a solution-oriented approach,” she said.

The workshop will focus on psychological development and emotional awareness, emotional mapping and behavioural analysis, emotional regulation exercises, and preparing teachers with strategies to deal with students’ overall mental well-being.
