New Delhi: Five people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a series of cable thefts at metro stations, police said on Saturday.
Police identified the suspects as Mohammad Karimulla (24), Mohammad Anas (21), Mohamma Junaid (25), Mohammad Alam (25) and Suraj Singh (25). All are residents of Shaheen Bagh.
"The gang was responsible for seven cable thefts, including Azadpur, Nehru Place, Shastri Park and Okhla Vihar metro stations," DCP (metro) Hareshvar V Swami said.
Following an extensive investigation that included CCTV analysis and technical surveillance, the police successfully traced the five. Three of them were found with 22 metres of stolen copper cables. These were found at two locations.
"Further interrogation revealed that Alam and Suraj had fled to West Bengal," DCP Swami added. A team was dispatched and, with the assistance from local authorities in Kolkata, both were arrested. An additional 6 metres of cable and Rs 5,000 in cash were recovered.
The five face multiple charges under the Metro Railway Act. Further investigation is on. TNN
