Mangaluru: An undertrial prisoner allegedly died by suicide at the district jail in Mangaluru on Sunday. The incident allegedly took place between 4.05am and 4.55am. The deceased is Prakash Gopal Moolya, 43, from Moodbidri.
City police commissioner Anupam Agrawal said that the accused was in judicial custody under UTP No. 308/2025 in connection with a crime reported at Moodbidri police station. He was arrested on March 11 under Section 65 of the BNS and Sections 4 & 6 of the
Pocso Act.
As per preliminary information, the prisoner hung himself using a towel tied to the window grill in the toilet of Barrack ‘B', cell No. 2 of the jail. The incident was immediately noticed by the duty staff, and he was rushed to Wenlock District Hospital. However, he was declared dead by the doctors after examination.
An unnatural death report was registered at Barke police station.
