Kanpur: A video went viral in the city, depicting a woman indulging in celebratory firing from a firearm while standing on the road on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the densely populated Govind Nagar locality, where a woman was seen brazenly firing shots in the air on a public road. Her reckless behaviour drew immediate attention from local residents and passersby who appeared to encourage the dangerous act.
Initial investigations revealed that a man had first loaded the weapon before handing it over to the woman. The footage, which quickly circulated on social media platforms, showed several bystanders recording the incident on their mobile phones and cheering the woman.
ACP (Babupurwa) Dilip Kumar Singh, upon reviewing the evidence, said that the police took prompt action although the incident had taken place about a week ago. The police team conducted a thorough search of the area and recovered the airgun used in the incident.
Local residents expressed their concern over such irresponsible behaviour in a residential area, saying that it could lead to serious consequences. "The incident has raised questions about the misuse of firearms in public spaces," they said.
The police are investigating the identities of the people involved in the incident. The police are investigating why the gathering was allowed to form and why no one reported the incident immediately.
Meanwhile, Commissionerate police have issued a stern warning against such acts, emphasising that firing any type of weapon in public places is a punishable offence. They have also urged citizens to report such incidents promptly to prevent potential accidents or misuse of weapons.
