Baazigar starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Shilpa Shetty was a blockbuster, grossing Rs 32 crore against the budget of Rs 4 crore. While most of its cast became successful, Adi Irani who played Vicky Malhotra in the film, failed to achieve the same level of success. In a recent interview, the actor recalled how his career didn’t take off as expected after Baazigar (1993)  and Anari (1993), leaving him in an extreme state of financial difficulties.

‘Couldn’t afford milk for my daughter’

While speaking to Filmytantra Media, the actor recounted that he couldn’t even afford basic necessities at that time. Adi said, “When my first daughter was born in 1995, I was struggling to make ends meet. Milk was Rs 5 a liter, and there were times I couldn’t even afford that. I had to borrow a friend’s scooter to travel around the city, searching for work and roles, and often I didn’t even have enough money to fill up the gas tank.”

Adi shared that his star sister Aruna Irani was aware about his struggles and offered help, but he turned it down. He believed that it was his own battle and didn’t want to ask help from her, as she had her own family to look after.

Adi then credited his wife for being there through the most difficult phase of his life. “People should admire my wife. Without her, I would have never gotten back up. Ours being a love marriage, sometimes I felt guilty that she had to struggle because of me,” he shared.

In the same interview, Adi recalled an incident while filming a scene with Salman Khan. The superstar accidentally threw him into a glass frame which led severe injuries on his face. The situation was so serious that he had refused to continue and the entire shoot got delayed for the next day. Though Salman did not aplogise immediately, he did make amends the next day. Adi added that the Tiger 3 actor spoke very nicely and seemed truly guilty about the whole incident.

Meanwhile, Adi Irani is also know for his notable roles in films like Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001), A Thursday (2002) and  Welcome (2007).
