New Delhi: Party, the mere mention of the word takes us to a different world altogether where we own the place, let loose, unleash, hang rough and tough with our family and friends, forget all the worries of the world, and just party.
Lately, the party scene has witnessed a big overhaul with more features being added or removed from these gatherings. These parties are lavish and are talked about, even making their ways to the socialite section of the popular media.
The base of these affluent social gatherings is big money. We have seen, heard about, and witnessed some of the most expensive parties.
Here, we will talk about one party that is labelled as the world’s most expensive party. It was held in Iran in the year 1971. At that time, Iran was not an overtly, strict Islamic country as it was under the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the last shah of Iran. He came to power in 1941. It can be said that Iran was a monarchy under the Shah.
Reza Shah possessed vast wealth and during his tenure, the Persian nation was heavily inspired by the Western culture and was an open society, just like any western country.
In 1971, the Shah organized an extravagant event to celebrate 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire in Persepolis. This opulent event was attended by representatives from 65 countries. It is estimated that this celebration cost a mammoth $100 million at that time.
It is reported for this occasion, 18 tons of food was flown in and 100 aircraft were used for transportation. A temporary city of tents was built in the desert to accommodate the guests.
In fact, it is said to be the most expensive party ever hosted in the history of the modern world. This was a landmark event that led to the end of the Shah’s rule as the country’s economy was not in good shape and this occasion fuelled the people with great anger and resentment against the Shah.
In a matter of less than a decade, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was ousted by Iranians led by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.
