Locals save woman trying to end life at Ganga Barrage
Kanpur: A high-voltage drama was witnessed at the Ganga Barrage on Saturday night when a woman, attempting to end her life, was saved by some alert onlookers. The woman was in inebriated state.
The passers-by noticed the woman in a visibly distressed state near gate number 16 of the Ganga Barrage at approximately 9:30 pm. The local divers, immediately recognised the gravity of the situation and approached her cautiously. Meanwhile, some passers-by alerted the emergency services and Nawabganj police.
The woman, who appeared disoriented, allegedly had a heated argument with her boyfriend earlier that evening. Upon arrival, the police team, led by Nawabganj police station inspector Dinanath Mishra, handled the situation with sensitivity. They ensured that the woman received immediate medical attention from the on-call paramedics. The police also contacted her family members and informed them of her whereabouts.
The entire incident lasted approximately 45 minutes. Some onlookers recorded videos of the rescue operation, which later went viral on social media platforms. The local administration has since increased patrolling in the area, particularly during evening hours.
The woman's family expressed profound gratitude to the alert citizens and police for their timely intervention and confirmed that she is now receiving proper care and counselling. The Nawabganj police documented the incident but did not file any formal charges. Inspector Mishra commended the public-police cooperation that prevented a potential tragedy.
