Police action against 606 revellers for driving drunk
Pune: The police in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad launched special drives to check vehicle users for drunk driving on Holi on Friday. The Pune police took action against 334 revellers, while the Pimpri Chinchwad police took action against 272 people found driving or riding in an inebriated condition when subjected to breath analyser tests at the checkpoints.
Pune's additional commissioner of police (East) Manoj Patil said, "We launched a special drive and deployed 1,500 policemen headed by deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Amol Zende to take action against Holi revellers found driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol at 60 checkpoints in the city. Our idea is to control irresponsible behaviour of vehicle users to prevent fatal accidents."
Patil said the drive also aims to take action against revellers found riding triple seat on bikes, indulging in wrong-side driving, and travelling in no-entry zones at high speed.
Assistant commissioner of police (Pune, traffic) Subhash Nikam said, "The traffic police have 240 breath analysers. We distributed four breath analysers each to 40 traffic divisions to intensify the drive against revellers on Holi. From 9am to 6pm, we took action against 200 revellers for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol."
The drive was conducted in different parts of the city, mainly Nagar Road, Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Vimanagar, Khadki, Chatushrungi, Baner, Deccan Gymkhana, Kothrud, Warje Malwadi, Shivajinagar, Satara Road, Kondhwa, Wanowrie, Hadapsar, among other areas, he added.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Bapu Bangar of the Pimpri Chinchwad police told TOI that the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police conducted a special drive and took action against 272 revellers for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol on Holi at 25 checkpoints.
