Trial run of the Rasipuram Combined Drinking Water Scheme will begin on April 1, said Rajya Sabha member K.R.N. Rajeshkumar on Saturday.
Mr. Rajeshkumar inspected the works of the scheme taking place at Chandrasekarapuram in Rasipuram Taluk and held discussions with the officials.
He told journalists that for supplying drinking water to Rasipuram Assembly constituency and its surrounding areas, the Edappadi Combined Drinking Water Scheme was implemented 40 years ago. Considering the increase in population and expansion of urban areas and the demand for uninterrupted drinking water supply, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the Rasipuram Combined Drinking Water Scheme at a cost of ₹854.37 crore and issued a government order.
The works began in September 2023 to cover Rasipuram Municipality, Rasipuram, Puduchatram, Namagiripettai, and Vennandur panchayat unions and Namagiripettai, Pattinam, Seerapalli, R. Pudupatti, Pillanallur, Vennandur, Athanur, and Mallasamudram town panchayats. The daily supply would be 76.14 million litres of water, Mr. Rajeshkumar added.
Stating that 98% of the works were completed, Mr. Rajeshkumar said the trial run for the scheme would begin on April 1 and go on for six months. Inspections would be conducted to see whether uninterrupted drinking water reached all areas and if there were any issues, these would be sorted out.
The residents would receive safe drinking water from the end of this year. The scheme included construction of 162 overhead water tanks and 156 ground-level water tanks in four panchayat unions and in eight town panchayats and drinking water pipelines were laid for 1,235 km. The water for the scheme would be pumped at the pumping station at Nedunkulam near Edappadi in Salem district. Through this scheme, eight lakh people would benefit. This scheme was announced by the DMK government and it would be inaugurated in the DMK regime, Mr. Rajeshkumar added.
During the inspections, Rasipuram Municipality chairman Kavitha Sankar and officials from departments concerned participated.
