Bank manager booked for siphoning off Rs 2.91 cr
Mangaluru: A bank manager in Konaje has been booked for allegedly siphoning off around Rs 2.91 crore from customers, especially senior citizens.
Derek Ajith D'Souza, while serving as the manager of the bank in Konaje from September 22, 2022, to February 7, 2024, allegedly sanctioned loans totalling Rs 1.44 crore against fixed deposits of senior citizens without their consent, CEN police said. He then transferred the money to the accounts of his accomplices, including Norbert D'Souza, Anil Prakash D'Souza, Vasanth K, Taniyappa, Paul D'Souza, Yashodhar, Mahesh Kulashekhar and Ramakrishna Alva.
Besides, when account holders came to open fixed deposits, Derek provided them with fake handwritten fixed deposit receipts instead of computer-printed ones. He then transferred Rs 67.9 lakh from the customers to the accounts of his accomplices without actually creating fixed deposits.
Through this set of malpractices, the manager and his accomplices siphoned off a total of Rs 2.91 crore of public money.
The bank's internal department discovered the fraud and conducted a departmental inquiry. Subsequently, around Rs 2.21 crore was returned to the customers, while the remaining Rs 69.83 lakh was not repaid by the accused, who used it for their own benefit.
Rs 10 lakh worth gold ornaments stolen
Mangaluru: Gold ornaments valued at Rs 10 lakh and cash amounting to Rs 5,700 were stolen from a house at Yermal in Maninalkur village under the jurisdiction of Bantwal rural police Station.
According to a complaint filed by Sameera, she returned to her maternal home following her baby shower, bringing with her 49 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 5,700 in cash. Later, when she needed to retrieve money from the cupboard before heading to the hospital, she found that all the gold ornaments and cash stored in the cupboard were taken. A case has been registered under sections 331(3), 331(4), 305 of the BNS.
Notorious criminal shifted to hospital
Mangaluru: Notorious criminal Isaac, who was shot at while trying to escape from police custody when he was being brought to Udupi on Wednesday, has been shifted to a hospital in Ajjarkad, Udupi for surgery.
Meanwhile, a court sent Isaac's accomplices Rahid, 25, from Surathkal, Samil, 26, from Kozhikode, Kerala, and Nizamuddin, 25, from Kasaragod, Kerala, to 14-day judicial custody.
Isaac, along with three others, was arrested in Channarayapatna police station limits, Hassan district. While escorting the accused from Channarayapatna to Manipal, the police vehicle halted near Gudde Angadi, under the Hiriyadka police station limits, at around 7.15pm, after Isaac claimed he urgently needed to vomit and relieve himself. As Isaac tried to flee, he was shot in the leg by police.
Arecanut stolen from APMC yard
Unidentified thieves gained entry into a warehouse at the APMC yard in Baikampady and decamped with six bags of arecanut weighing 360kg, worth Rs 1.3 lakh. Warehouse overseer Ram arrived at the facility on Thursday morning and informed the complainant about the theft of arecanut. The complainant ran a trading company engaged in arecanut business for about 15 years, with a warehouse located in Baikampady. The complainant purchased arecanut from traders at Bunder and stored it in the warehouse.
Upon reaching the warehouse, the complainant noticed that some unidentified persons opened the facility's door using a key and damaged the CCTV camera before stealing the arecanut. Panambur police have registered a case.
