One of these four Michigan small towns could be named ‘best in the Midwest’

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Four Michigan towns are in the running to be named USA Today’s best small town in the Midwest.

Grand Haven, Saugatuck, Petoskey and Mackinac Island are among 20 small towns chosen by what USA Today called an “expert panel.” Each small town chosen had a population of fewer than 25,000. Readers can vote for their choice once per day from now until polls close on March 31 at noon.

Grand Haven was praised for its “sandy beaches, scenic boardwalk, and iconic coastal landmarks,” including the Grand Haven Lighthouse. The town’s musical fountain was also mentioned.

Saugatuck made the list for its “charming mix of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences” like Saugatuck Dunes State Park, galleries and local events as well as shops and restaurants.

Petoskey’s Sunset Park and Lake Michigan views are lauded as well as “the opportunity to explore Bear River Valley Recreation Area, a natural feature that’s rife with rapids,” USA Today wrote.

Mackinac Island is called a “bucket-list destination,” known for its Victorian charm, historic sites, horse-drawn carriages and of course, fudge. Fort Mackinac and the Grand Hotel are mentioned as well as biking the island.

Towns from Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Minnesota and Ohio made the list as well.

Votes can be cast on USA Today’s website. The winner of the contest will be announced April 9.
