Sweltering summer augments watermelon sale in Hubballi
Hubballi: The scorching sun has led to watermelon becoming a popular choice for people seeking respite. Farmers from Tamil Nadu and Ankola are working diligently to meet the increasing market demand.
Local vendors reported a substantial increase in their daily sales, with many setting up dedicated watermelon stalls across various locations. The fruit's high water content and natural cooling properties make it appealing during hot weather.
Wholesale markets are doing brisk business, with traders noting that the quality of watermelons this season is exceptional. The size and sweetness of the fruit are consistently good, contributing to higher consumer satisfaction.
Small retailers and pushcart vendors have also benefited from increased sales, as they can now offer competitive prices to their customers. Vendors at APMC suggest that the price fluctuations are typical during peak season. The initial higher prices reflected early season demand, while the subsequent decrease indicated a balanced supply situation.
The expected price rise is attributed to sustained demand and the approaching peak summer months. Traders anticipate the demand to remain strong throughout the summer season, with supply chains well-prepared to handle the increased requirements.
Healthcare experts recommend watermelon as a natural way to stay hydrated during summer, further boosting its popularity among consumers of all age groups.
Saleem, a watermelon seller from Keshwapur, mentioned that watermelon prices increased a week before the Mahashivaratri festival. He stated that they receive sufficient quantities of high-quality black watermelon from Ankola, and to fulfil the market requirements, they also source watermelons from Tamil Nadu.
He noted that watermelon demand remains elevated since Mahashivaratri, through the Ramzan month. He further explained that Hubballi has more than 500 traders involved in watermelon sales, conducting their business through push carts and other means.
Dr GB Sattur, an expert in cardiology and diabetes from Hubballi, explained that watermelon serves as a delightful and cooling summer treat with minimal calories. Besides providing essential hydration, it delivers crucial nutrients, encompassing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. With its 91% water composition, watermelon proves beneficial for maintaining hydration during summer months. Its natural sugar content helps satisfy sweet cravings.
The fruit's inherent sweetness comes paired with vitamins A and C, which enhance immune system function and maintain skin health. Additionally, it contains modest quantities of potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, and beneficial antioxidants that protect health, he further stated.
