Scorching Heat in South Bengal

The Alipore Meteorological Department has reported a sharp temperature rise across South Bengal. In Kolkata, the daytime temperature on Holi is expected to range between 35°C and 36°C, while some districts may experience temperatures exceeding 38°C.

At present, there is no chance of rainfall in South Bengal, making the days hotter and more uncomfortable. Although mornings and evenings might remain slightly pleasant, daytime heat is expected to soar significantly. Over the next four to five days, the maximum temperature could rise by 4°C, while minimum temperatures may remain 3°C above normal levels.

Contrasting Weather in North Bengal

Unlike the scorching conditions in South Bengal, North Bengal will witness an entirely different weather pattern. The IMD has predicted rainfall starting from Tuesday, affecting key districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Kalimpong.

The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase on Wednesday and Thursday, with thunderstorms and light to moderate rain likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur. On Holi, scattered showers are also possible in parts of North Bengal, which could bring a brief respite from the heat.

Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Activity

Meteorologists have attributed the weather fluctuations to multiple active systems. A new Western Disturbance is likely to be active from March 12, influencing weather patterns in Rajasthan and Assam. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and a trough extending from Madhya Pradesh to Haryana are contributing to the rising temperatures in South Bengal.

Kolkata’s Temperature and Humidity Levels

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 23.2°C, while Monday’s maximum temperature reached 32.4°C. The humidity levels ranged between 40% and 94%, adding to the discomfort by making the weather more humid and sultry.

What to Expect During Holi?

With rising temperatures and no rainfall in sight, Holi celebrations in South Bengal are likely to be dominated by heat and humidity. Experts advise people to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun for prolonged periods, and take necessary precautions against heat-related ailments.

On the other hand, residents of North Bengal may need to prepare for sudden showers, especially in the hilly areas, where the chances of rainfall remain high throughout the festival.
