A two-and-a-half-year-old girl died after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Manimangalam, near Tambaram, on Monday.
The Tambaram police identified the victim as Aruthra, the youngest daughter of Balachandran and Vidhya, who lived in the apartment.
The police said Vidhya and her two daughters were on the fourth floor of the apartment building. Aruthra slipped through the railing of the stairs on the floor, fell, and injured her head. The mother rushed down the stairs to check on her child, but tripped and broke her leg, the police said. Other residents of the apartment building rushed the injured to a private hospital. The doctors there declared Aruthra dead.
The Shankar Nagar police sent the body to the Chromepet Government Hospital for a post-mortem.
