In a daring robbery, an unidentified man barged into a house in Star Nagar in Melur and snatched eight sovereigns of gold from an elderly woman after inflicting bleeding injuries on her with a knife on Monday morning.

Police said that L. Manickam, 65, a resident of Star Nagar, had got of the house for early morning walking. When he returned home, he was shocked to find his wife Sai Lakshmi, 60, with bleeding injuries. The woman told him that someone had entered the house and tried to smother her with a pillow while she was asleep at around 6 a.m.

Even as she resisted, the man cut her hand with a knife and yanked her gold chain and fled the scene. Forensic experts and sniffer dog were pressed into service. Melur police are investigating.
