Child protection panel to act tough on unauthorised tuition centres in Kozhikode

Published - March 11, 2025 08:07 pm IST - Kozhikode

The Kozhikode district child protection committee has decided to close down unauthorised tuition centres in the district. The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee, chaired by District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, here on Tuesday.

All the tuition centres will have to register as per the Panchayat Raj Act. It was pointed out during the meeting that many tuition centres in the district were functioning without registration. At least some of them don’t even have proper toilets or other facilities. Such centres will have to be closed down immediately or action according to the Juvenile Justice Act will be taken against them. Local body officials need to inspect the tuition centres to find out the unauthorised institutions. If the centres are holding big events such as DJ parties, the nearby police stations will have to be informed.

These decisions come against the backdrop of the death of a Class X student in Thamarassery on March 1 after a group clash, which followed a tussle that developed during a farewell party at a tuition centre there.

Ward-level child protection committees will have to be revived and they need to conduct a vulnerability mapping of children to find those who need protection. Also, school-level vigilance committees will have to discuss issues related to substance abuse and violence among children. The Childline number 1098 can be contacted to address the problems being faced by them. Boards exhibiting this number and the problems for which help is being provided need to be installed in government, aided, and unaided schools as well as tuition centres in the district. All schools should appoint counsellors.
