Ghaziabad: A truck killed a 60-year-old man and injured five others in Modinagar when it struck a cycle cart and then collided with an e-rickshaw on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred near Kadrabad village, where the truck first crashed into a cart parked in front of a petrol pump, resulting in the man's death. The driver, who was found to be heavily drunk, then lost control of the heavy vehicle, veered to the opposite side of the road, and hit an e-rickshaw, leaving four persons injured. The truck driver was arrested.
The man who died was Jwala Singh, a resident of Modinagar. His son Anuj, who filed a police complaint, said his father was ferrying goods towards Meerut around 2pm on Sunday when the truck came from behind and forcefully hit his cart near Kadabad petrol pump.
Gyan Prakash Rai, ACP (Modinagar), corroborated the claim. "As Jwala Singh reached near Kadabad petrol pump, a truck that was already out of control crashed into the cart from behind. After hitting the cart, the driver crossed the divider, turned in the opposite direction, and hit an e-rickshaw as well," he said.
Jwala Singh died before he could be taken to a hospital. Salman, Farman, Arman, and Afsar of Modinagar — who were travelling in the e-rickshaw — suffered injuries along with its driver, Amit Kumar.
"The injured passengers were taken to a private hospital. Amit, Afsar, and Arman, who suffered critical injuries, were transferred to another hospital as their condition deteriorated. The injured passengers work as salespersons and were on their way back home after work when the accident occurred," Rai said.
Officials said the accident triggered a traffic snarl on Delhi-Meerut road. Within minutes, long queues of vehicles formed on either side, causing disruptions. Police arrived at the scene, cleared away the wreckage, and used a crane to pull the truck from a nearby field.
"An FIR was registered against the truck driver, Meerut resident Babu, under sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving), and 125B (causing grievous hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others) of BNS. He was arrested and the truck seized. The accused driver was under the influence of alcohol," Rai said.
