Bengal cops assaulted after nabbing suspect in Algapur
Silchar: A contingent of West Bengal Police officers faced an assault by miscreants at Algapur in Assam's Hailakandi district while attempting to apprehend a suspect involved in an alleged financial fraud. The incident has heightened tension in the area.
The suspect, Masoom Ahmed Choudhury, was arrested in connection with the case and reportedly played a role in the attack on Saturday. Authorities are also investigating the possible involvement of Sharif Uddin Choudhury, the working president of the Assam Gana Parishad's (AGP) Hailakandi district unit and the suspect's father.
Sources from Algapur police station said Masoom allegedly solicited Rs 80 lakh from a Kolkata business organisation under the pretext of legitimate dealings. However, he is accused of misappropriating the funds, leading the aggrieved party to file an FIR at Chandannagar police station in West Bengal.
Following the complaint, a team from West Bengal police travelled to Hailakandi to arrest the accused and conduct further investigations. While transporting Masoom back to Kolkata, the officers were attacked near the Algapur police station.
In the assault, seven personnel sustained injuries, including a sub-inspector and a constable. Masoom later claimed that the police failed to notify local authorities and attempted to covertly move him, mistaking them for kidnappers due to their plainclothes.
