Mandya: For the welfare, progress, and quality education of the students, Mandya University, Hassan University and Chamarajanagar University should be merged into the world-class University of Mysore (UoM), said former vice-chairman of the legislative council Marithibbegowda on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, he suggested that it would be appropriate to merge the newly established universities of Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan with the UoM to provide quality education to students in higher education. He emphasised the need to retain the postgraduate centres in Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan while providing opportunities for degree, postgraduate, and research programmes under the UoM. He also urged the govt to quickly fill vacant teaching positions and backlog posts at the UoM.
He mentioned that merging Mandya University with the UoM would not lead to the displacement of students, professors, or courses. Students would be able to continue their studies as they are. He also called for an end to misinformation that once Mandya University is merged with the UoM, everything would be transferred to Mysuru. From the perspective of students and society, he suggested that merging Mandya University—which lacks the capacity to provide quality education—with the UoM, which is capable of offering quality education, would not cause any difficulties for rural and underprivileged students in these three districts. Instead, it would brighten their future. He accused the BJP govt of establishing universities in Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan merely for the positions of vice-chancellor and registrar, without any proper study or consideration for their quality.
