Row over judge’s remarks: advocates’ body suspends senior lawyer

Published - March 10, 2025 07:56 pm IST - KOCHI

The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association has suspended senior lawyer George Poonthottam from membership of the association for attending a meeting called by the Chief Justice to resolve a complaint by Sarita Thomas, wife of a deceased lawyer, against a High Court judge, without the permission of the association.

The association decided not to implement its earlier decision to boycott the court of Justice A. Badharudeen who had allegedly made some discomforting remarks to the woman lawyer. The association also decided to write to the Chief Justice of India seeking the transfer of Justice Badharudeen from the High Court.

The association had decided to boycott Justice Badharudeen’s court in deference to a resolution moved by senior advocate George Poonthottam and other lawyers on March 8. The woman lawyer later wrote to the association to drop all further proceedings as the judge had ‘expressed deep regret’ in the presence of the Chief Justice, Justice A. Muhammed Mustaque, and Mr. Poonthottam.
