India makes its mark in global chip research

India has achieved a significant milestone by ranking third globally in chip design research papers. This accomplishment reflects the country’s growing influence in the semiconductor industry, particularly in the research and development sector. Emerging Technology Observatory’s Research Almanac tracks global trends in research across critical technology domains, mapping growth trends and identifying leading companies, research institutions and companies.

Between 2018 and 2023, Indian organizations contributed 39,709 research papers, accounting for 8.4% of the global share of 472,819 papers. This represents a 26% increase over the five years, aligning with India’s emerging focus on the critical semiconductor industry. According to the latest data from the Research Almanac, about 475,000 chip design and fabrication-related articles were released between 2018 and 2023. Chip research grew 8% overall between 2018 and 2023. That’s slower growth than in hot research areas like AI or LLMs.
