Hyderabad: The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) recently conducted a successful heart transplantation for a 19-year-old man from Kathedan, who was suffering from a severe cardiac condition. The procedure was performed under the Aarogyasri health scheme.
The heart donor was a 24-year-old man declared brain dead following a road accident. NIMS director Dr Bheerappa Nagari, highlighted that NIMS is currently the only govt hospital in India performing both heart and lung transplants.
Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha congratulated the recipient and expressed gratitude to the donor's family. He also cautioned private hospitals against irregularities in organ transplantation practices, warning of strict penalties under new regulations aimed at combating illegal organ trafficking.
The minister directed doctors to ensure regular monitoring of transplant recipients.
He announced that a cutting-edge organ transplantation centre will soon be operational at the Gandhi Hospital.
