Sardesai takes credit as govt moves to declare ‘jayanche molle’ as biodiversity heritage site

Panaji: With the Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) officially writing to the Veling-Priol village panchayat to adopt a gram sabha resolution to declare ‘jayanche molle’ (jasmine plantation) as a biodiversity heritage site, GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai hailed the move as a victory for his party.
Sardesai raised the issue in the legislative assembly, stressing the urgent need to protect ‘jayanche molle’ from destructive activities. “The party’s relentless efforts led to govt taking concrete steps towards its preservation,” said Sardesai.
The GFP chief described ‘jayanche molle’ as a symbol of the state’s identity and commitment to sustainable development.
GFP said that there were “alarming attempts” to burn the cultivations to enable the construction of commercial and residential projects. Once the gram sabha adopts the resolution, the GSBB will guide the local bodies through the formal process of notifying it as a biodiversity heritage site.
Sardesai urged the Veling-Priol panchayat to act swiftly and ensure that the gram sabha adopts the resolution.
