Udaipur: In a joint action, Udaipur police and DST team conducted raid and busted a factory producing adulterated ghee, packaged under well-known brands such as Saras, Amul and Nova, in Kaladwas RIICO area here Saurday. Police seized 1,500kg spurious ghee from the factory and detained two workers.
DSP Chhagan Purohit said the factory was owned by Lokesh Jain, a resident of Salumber. During the raid, authorities seized 1,500kg of adulterated ghee. Two workers were also detained for questioning. "The ghee was being mixed with soybean, dalda, and essence, making it nearly indistinguishable from real ghee," said a food safety officer.
The adulterated products were packaged in containers resembling the authentic brands. A team from Saras Dairy was called to the site, who confirmed the ghee to be fake after inspection. Similarly, representatives from Nova and Krishna ghee companies were sent photos, who confirmed that the batch numbers did not belong to their companies
The factory's ground floor housed a tin warehouse, while ghee production occurred in the basement with machines and furnaces. Police said the counterfeit ghee was primarily distributed to local villages, especially during weddings and festivals, where demand for such products peaks. Approximately 150kg of ghee was distributed daily from this location, with higher quantities sold during weddings and the festive season. The accused sold one tin for Rs 4,200.
