Mysterious disappearance of Pakistani Hindu man en route to India for holy dip in Maha Kumbh Mela
Amritsar: A Pakistani Hindu man, Prakash, was allegedly abducted from the Wagah border in Pakistan just moments before crossing into India with his family on way to Prayagraj for a holy dip in the recently concluded Maha Kumbh Mela.
Prakash was separated from his family under mysterious circumstances, leaving his relatives searching for him with no information about his whereabouts. Following his disappearance, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) intervened and wrote formally to Pakistan's interior minister, urging authorities to locate him and ensure his safe recovery.
HRCP chairperson Asad Iqbal Butt said on Saturday that Prakash, 28, of Mirpur Khas in Pakistan's Sindh province, had gone missing while travelling with family on Feb 21. As the group reached the Wagah border crossing, Prakash was allegedly abducted, while some of his relatives managed to enter India. Butt says that Prakash's family had claimed that he disappeared during the immigration process.
After their attempts to locate him failed, HRCP wrote on March 6 to Pakistan's interior minister Mohsin Naqvi, calling for an investigation. "We are unsure about the exact circumstances of Prakash's disappearance — whether he was picked up by intelligence agencies or other individuals," Butt said. "It is also possible that border security personnel stopped him, fearing he might not return to Pakistan, as some of his relatives have done."
However, Butt emphasised that Prakash remains a Pakistani citizen, and it is the responsibility of Pakistan's govt to trace him and ensure his safe return to his family.
