The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a USD 248 million agreement with Russian company Rosoboronexport to upgrade the engines of its T-72 tanks. Under this deal, the tanks will be equipped with 1000 HP engines, significantly boosting their speed and combat capability. A key aspect of this agreement is the transfer of technology (ToT), which will allow Heavy Vehicle Factory in Avadi, Chennai, to manufacture these engines domestically. This move aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, aiming to strengthen self-reliance in the defense sector.
Stronger and more powerful T-72 tanks
Currently, the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks run on 780 HP engines. With the new 1000 HP engines, these tanks will become faster, more powerful, and more efficient in combat. This upgrade will enhance India’s military strength and national security.
India’s growing defence exports
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently highlighted India’s progress in defense self-reliance. He stated that India’s defense exports have grown from Rs. 600 crore a decade ago to over Rs. 21,000 crore in 2023-24. The government aims to reach Rs. 50,000 crore by 2029-30.
Fast-growing defence sector
India’s defense sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 20% between 2024 and 2029, according to CareEdge Ratings. Government policies and increased private sector involvement have accelerated advancements in weapons, ammunition, aerospace, electronics, and naval technology.
This new deal with Russia marks another step in India’s journey toward a stronger, self-sufficient defense industry.
