A 75-year-old woman was rescued safely after fire broke out in her house at Gajalnaickanpatti near Tirupattur town on Saturday, resulting in thick smoke in the area.

Police said that it was around 1 p.m when B. NoorJahan, a native of Gajalnaickanpatti village, noticed thick smoke coming from the electrical switch board in the house. Along with her son Mohammed Jamal, she returned to her house after completing some farm work in the paddy field. Jamal went outside for some work while Noor Jahan was lying in her cot when she noticed smoke in the switch board.  As she cried for help, residents and neighbours rushed to the spot. They also alerted the Kandali police and fire and rescue services department from Tirupattur town about the incident. Before firefighters could reach the spot, fire spread to adjoining asbestos roofed houses. Together, four houses on Bargur Main Road near Tirupattur town were completely gutted before fire fighters doused it.   Residents complained of severe eye irritation especially among children and senior citizens due to smoke from the spot. A case was registered by Kandali police.
