Women’s Day celebrated in Salem Prison

As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, 10 competitions were conducted at the women’s prison in Salem. Prizes were distributed to the women prisoners and prison staff who won in the competitions. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) prisons, Coimbatore Range, distributed the prizes to the winners. In the function, Salem Central Prison Superintendent (in charge) G. Vinoth, Deputy Jailor Geetha, Assistant Jailer Selvi, and staff participated.

Cyber Crime police arrests man for cheating in Salem

Salem District Cyber Police arrested C. Sundar Rajan (38), a resident of Kamaraj Nagar Colony in Ammapet, for allegedly defrauding several people by promising them jobs in Dubai and other foreign countries. The arrest was carried out after the police received complaints from five people claiming to have been duped collectively of ₹20.75 lakh by Sundar. The police also seized a mobile phone, SIM card and four ATM cards belonging to Sundar and are on the lookout for his associates Siraj and Kapil Dev, residents of Ramanathapuram district.

12 injured after tourist van overturns in Yercaud

A group of 12 tourists from Chennai, including two children, were injured after the tourist van they were travelling in overturned at Yercaud. The van was headed towards Yercaud from Salem and had reached the 40-feet bridge when it overturned while navigating a turn. P. Sivabharathi (24), a resident of Kumbakonam, sustained injuries, while the remaining escaped with minor injuries. The incident affected vehicle movement in the Ghat Road for 15 minutes. Yercaud Police registered a case and are investigating further.

Man gets five years imprisonment for sexual assault in Salem

Senthil Kumar (32), a resident of Vanavasi, was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in January 2017 by the Nangavalli police. The case trial was held at the Special Court for Exclusive Trial of Cases under the POCSO Act in Salem, and on Friday, the court found the accused guilty and awarded five years of imprisonment and also imposed a ₹1,000 fine.
