Need for constituting Adi Dravidar welfare panel did not arise, contends T.N. govt.

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday (March 8, 2025) contended that the “need to constitute a State-Level Adi Dravidar Welfare Committee did not arise” as it had already constituted the Tamil Nadu State Commission for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes through a legislation in 2021.

This was stated in a rejoinder issued in response to media reports that cited a reply obtained under the Right to Information Act that the State government had not constituted the State-Level Adi Dravidar Welfare Committee since 2020. The government said the Commission had been functioning to monitor and protect the welfare of those communities and offer suggestions and solutions.

The State-Level Adi Dravidar Welfare Committee was initially constituted in 1995. The panel reconstituted in 2017 was neither constituted again nor given an extension.
