Bullseye dreams: Tribal archer aims for global glory
Bhubaneswar: From the remote tribal regions of Kalahandi district emerges an inspiring story of determination and sporting excellence. Sixteen-year-old Rachana Majhi, an archer with five medals in various school and state-level championships, is now setting her sights on international competitions.
Growing up in challenging circumstances after losing her father at a young age, Rachana found her calling in archery when she watched her classmates practice the sport. What began as curiosity soon transformed into a passionate pursuit of excellence. Now training rigorously at an archery academy in Lanjigarh, she recalls when she first encountered the sport. "When I first saw archery being practised, I knew this was what I wanted to do," said Rachana.
Her mother, who single-handedly supported the family through difficult times, has been her strongest pillar of support. "She never stopped me from chasing my dream in archery. The training by the coach further pushed my ambition," Rachana said.
Her coach, Simanchal Kadarka, said, "Rachana's dedication and natural talent for archery are remarkable. With proper training and support, she has the potential to represent India at international events."
As the world celebrates International Women's Day 2025, Rachana's journey highlights the crucial role of sports in promoting gender equality and empowering young girls. Various organisations are now stepping forward to support talented athletes like her, providing necessary resources and training facilities.
Her story also underscores the importance of grassroots sports programmes in discovering and nurturing talent from underprivileged backgrounds. "Sports can be a powerful tool for social change and economic empowerment," says Suvendu Jena, a local sports administrator.
