Chandigarh: Controversy marred the municipal corporation's women's day celebration as mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla failed to send invites to women municipal councillors. The mayor, however, attended the event. In protest, both the opposition and BJP's women councillors boycotted the celebration held at Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38.
"It is shocking that, even as a woman, the city mayor did not invite women councillors to the official women's day function. This shows that the mayor is only interested in promoting herself. She has no respect for her fellow women municipal councillors. It is now obvious that if she doesn't respect her fellow women councillors, she won't respect the women of the city," said Prem Lata, municipal councillor of AAP.
While addressing the gathering on the occasion, the mayor emphasised the vital role women play in shaping society and acknowledged their growing contributions in various fields. She highlighted the importance of
women empowerment and encouraged women to make independent decisions for their rights and future.
Municipal commissioner Amit Kumar also addressed the attendees, appreciating the efforts of women in different sectors and reaffirming the MC's commitment to supporting women-centric initiatives. The event featured speeches, cultural performances, and interactive sessions.
