Varanasi: A criminal was injured and arrested by the Karanda police team in Ghazipur district after an encounter on Thursday night. The police recovered a country-made pistol of 315 bore, two used cartridges, and a motorcycle.
Under the campaign against crime and criminals, Ghazipur police were checking suspicious individuals and vehicles at various locations. During checking at Dharmarpur intersection, Bharsara checkpoint in-charge and his team noticed two individuals without helmets on a motorcycle coming from the Bharsara side. When signalled to stop, the criminals attempted to run over the police with their motorcycle and fled towards Zamania.
The checkpoint in-charge informed the station in-charge and started chasing them. Acting on the information, the station in-charge and his team attempted to corner the criminals advancing from the Zamania bridge. Near the Dharmarpur bridge, the criminals fired two rounds at the police team. In self-defence, the police also responded with firing, injuring one criminal in the left leg. The injured criminal was sent to CHC Karanda for primary treatment. Another criminal managed to escape, taking advantage of the darkness.
During interrogation, the injured criminal identified himself as Kamlesh alias Chhaghur Yadav, a resident of Badagaon, Sadat police station area of Ghazipur district. According to his criminal history, he was wanted in 16 criminal cases in Ghazipur and Azamgarh districts.
Legal proceedings against Yadav are on, said police.
